PIZZA SHOP FIRE

Monday. after just returning from 3 hours of "Live Fire" practice, units alerted for a possible fire at Sardo's Pizza Shop on South Ave. Eng 3, Truck 4 & Squad 5 responded and arrived to find a slight smoke condition in the shop and a small grill stove fire. The "Pizza Maker" had almost put the fire out. The Engine crew took care of the fire while the Truck crew took care of ventilation and utilities. The "Squad Company" took care of local traffic on South Ave. Units cleared in 30 min. Asst Chief Flynn had the "South Ave  Command" Onondaga County Health Dept was advised.

OHFD units alerted for a car fire near South ave at Mitchell (City). Units (RP-2) arrived to find the fire out but used a hose line to cool the engine compartment down. Units cleared in 30 min.

 
   
 
RESCUE PUMPER TO SOLVAY FREEMAN AVE FIRE

WED. 23:30hrs OHFD & area depts alerted for a working fire at a 3 story wood frame apartment house. Heavy fire on all 3 floors with extension into the attic. OHFD RP-2 crew worked for over an hour at the scene along with fill in at Solvay Station 1.

 
 
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

THURSDAY. Tonight one of OHFD Explorer Jr. Fire Fighters graduates from High School. (Corcoran). Thomas Sexton received his diploma tonight in a ceremony at the Civic Center downtown. Tom has been with OHFD now for over three years and is a great asset to our department. Tom plans on going to OCC this fall taking criminal justice and fire fighter classes. This summer Tom is working for the City of Syracuse Parks

Wed. 11:03hrs. A fire box was transmitted today for a possible cloths on fire in a basement on a briefcase at 4800 Makyes Road. Engine 94 (Fairmount Chief Clark OIC) arrived first to find a ranch fully involved in fire front to back, with heavy black smoke. Chief Clark transmitted a "Signal 99" working fire. Taunton, Howlett Hill, and Solvay crews arrived and went to work. Fire was under control in 18 mins. Camillus, Marcellus and South Onondaga also provide either crews on scene or move up, standby companies. The cause of the fire is accidental. All occupants were out on arrival. A 9 yr old who was home heard a smoke detector (battery just changed the day before) and smelled smoke, he got everyone (dogs included) out and called 911. A great job done by the engine 94 crew today. No injuries reported. OHFD Chief Okoniewski had the "Command" Units cleared in 3 hours. Thanks to Ron & others at the local Byrne Dairy Store in helping us get cold water for the "hot" fire fighters to drink during this emergency.

 
   
   
 
JAZZ FEST 2008

This years JGB Jazz Fest will be Friday & Saturday June 27th & 28th. Fire works will be on Saturday only starting at 10:30pm. OHFD Members duty crews needed for standby at OCC & at the fire station. Please see the board for sign up sheets.

 
 
JUST MARRIED

SATURDAY: Longtime Captain Steve Mangano was married today to Lyndsie Haynes at Bellevue Heights Church on Geddas Street. A reception followed at the Hilton Garden Inn in East Syracuse. The couple are honeymooning in Florida. Congratulation by all at OHFD. We wish them a long happy marriage and lots of babies.

 
 
BUSY ENGINE 94 DAY/EVENING

FRIDAY OHFD Engine 94 was very busy today handling 7 alarms mostly in Onondaga Hill area. The pace was kept the same with 5 more runs after the 94 shift ended at 6pm. Units stop running by 9pm.

 
 
WESTBROOK HILLS APARTMENTS / STOVE FIRE

FRIDAY 18:15 HRS. A fire box was transmitted for a possible fire. OHFD Car 1 (Okoniewski) and Engine 3 arrived to find nothing showing and the home owner outside with the family. Once crews got inside a minor stove fire with minor damage was discovered. Command held Engine 3 (Oic Capt LeFever) and Truck 4 (Oic Lt Zinkievich) to ventilate the structure and check for extension and the amount of damage. A working smoke detector was sounding on arrival of units. 12 Volunteers responded on this alarm, units cleared in 30 min.

NY State results are in! OHFD now has 4 more EMT's to serve are community. After more than 6 months of class room and hands on training, plus ambulance ride time the following members are NYS certified. Colleen Gannon, Jon Maye, Lt.Paul Lukacs and Clarence McNair.

 
 
5 CAR CRASH ON WEST SENECA TNPK

TUESDAY 7:45HRS OHFD & TAUNTON Rescue units alerted for a pile up on W. Seneca TNPK @ City View Terrace. OHFD RP-2 & TFD RP-3 arrived to find all victims out of thier cars. EMTS from both departments checked everyone out with no injury's. A minor fluid leak was handled by the OHFD hazards crew. Crews cleared in 40 mins. Traffic was backed up for 2 miles.

 
   
   
 
SEVERE T-STORM ROLLS BY CAUSES TREE INTO A MOVING CAR WITH INJURIES

TUESDAY 11:45hrs After a line of quite strong thunder storms, wind, rain & lighting passed by a Rescue box was transmitted for a tree on top of a car on Velasko Road at Onondaga Road. RP-2 arrived to the correct address of Velasko Road on the hill by the golf course to find a large tree down in the road with a large branch thru the window injuring a female. EMTS packaged and boarded the victim.

Captain Mangano will be having drill this Saturday 9am sharp. He will be going over fire behavior and hands on use of fire extinguishers with class A & B fires. All welcome.

 
 
BROAD ROAD ACCIDENT

Tuesday 13:10hrs. OHFD & Taunton Rescue units alerted for a truck pole accident on Broad Rd near Skyline Dr. OHFD Deputy Chief Fuller (Command) first to arrive to find a male laying in the roadway as the wires & power transformer burned above him. OHFD Rescue Pumper 2 arrived with 4 volunteers lead by Lou "Louie" Rezak. They quickly put the male on a backboard and moved him out of harms way. OHFD & Taunton EMT's and crew worked on the injured party togather. National Grid was called to secure power so crews could put out the pole/transformer fire. OHFD also handled a EMS (heart attack) call during this 1 hour ordeal. Just a typical day here at OHFD.

FORMER MEMBER PASSES AWAY

It is with regret that OHFD announces the passing of Stanley C. Parker 78. Mr. Parker was also a member of WAVES ambulance service. In the 70's Mr. Parker was the first EMT in Onondaga Hill Fire Department. Calling hours are Tuesday 4-7pm at Badman Butler Funeral Home. OHFD members are to report in full dress uniform meeting at the station at 18:00hrs.
