ONONDAGA ROAD-TAUNTON

Taunton and surrounding fire units alerted to smoke in the basement. Units arrived to find nothing showing. Taunton command held TFD Ladder 5 and FFD Truck 1 for a possible electrical problem. OHFD RP-2 responded with 5 volunteers on the call but was returned on arrival.


 
BUSY ENGINE 94 DAY

OHFD Engine 94 crew was very busy today. They handled 14 calls. One being a mutal aid fire to Solvay. Several EMS calls, and a couple of service type calls. The 6 volunteers on the rig today did manage to get lunch in.

OHFD is at about 460 calls to date. Last year (2008) OHFD had 963.


 
FIRE ALARM BROAD ROAD

911 toned out pagers for OHFD & Taunton for a residential fire alarm on Skyline Dr. OHFD Car 1 arrived to find a ranch style house with smoke inside. After investigation revealed a burnt pan of food on the stove. OHFD Engine 3 arrived with 4 volunteers and used a fan to rid the house of smoke. No injuries reported. Units cleared in 30 min.


 
JAZZ FEST 2009

This Friday & Saturday June 26th & 27th, The annual OCC Jazz Fest will take place. OHFD Volunteers will be standing by Saturday night for the fire works display. Also the three Fire Chiefs will do a shift in the Counties command post located near the main stage. Volunteers will also staff an Engine back at the station for district protection.


 
PUSHBALL AT MINOA

This past Thursday night, 4 of OHFD bravest went to the Minoa FD field days and played 2 1/2" push ball. They won one push. On Friday, 2 teams showed up and played 1 1/2". All teams did well but did not finish in the top three. Great job. Look for OHFD this month in Hinsdale.


 
SOUTH ONONDAGA BRUSH FIRE

 South Onondaga and surrounding departments operated at Saunders Concrete on Route 80 for a very large brush, field fire. OHFD Eng 3 filled tankers on Dorwin ave while the crew worked the fire. Rescue Pumper 2 crew responded as manpower to the scene to support all fire fighters on scene. Units operated for over 2 hours. One fire fighter injury was reported.


 
PUSHBALL 2009

The season begins. FF Tom Sexton, Steve Serrao, Chris Bush & Dan Mabbit started the season off today (Sunday) playing men's 1 1/2 " & 2 1/2" push ball at Chittenango's  Fire Depts annual Memorial Day weekend tournament. The "Men" did well, but did not finish in the top three. Catch them this weekend in Minoa. See attached pictures.

RESCUE COMPANY MEMBERS PRACTICE

During the last two months the department has broken up into three different training groups. One of them is the Rescue Company. They have practiced first aid, CPR, auto extrication, SCBA work, search & rescue, rope rescue and other types of rescue work. Attached are a few pictures.

NFPA 1001 GRADUATION

Tonight at OCC, one of our own SCBA Tech Jon Maye received his certification in NFPA 1001 Level 2, a 60 hour class on enhanced fire fighter skills and education. Also Jon received his certification as a Level 1 Fire Instructor. This is training on becoming a front line supervisor.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH

May is the time of year when the weather gets warmer and we start to see lots of motorcycles out on the roadways. Please be extra careful and give the bikes just a bit more room. OHFD this month will be practicing how to handle motorcycle emergencies.


 
VELASKO ROAD CRASH

A diabetic attack caused a male driver while driving up Velasko Rd from Onondaga to strike several trees and bushes before coming to rest in front of the house next to the fire station. 911 alerted the volunteers to check a male in a car with an illness. Units arrived and notified 911 that this was an accident caused by a male with low blood sugar. Lt Gancarz instructed crew members to treat this as a motor vehicle crash and package the patient for the ambulance. Rescue 1 crew arrived to take care of hazards. Units cleared in 45 minutes.

ONONDAGA COUNTY TRAFFIC SAFETY FAIR

At OCC today over 500 High school students participated in Onondaga County's Traffic Safety Day. Funded by state and county government, 7 area High Schools traveled to OCC see what things that they should not do while driving on the road. There was a course for student's to drive on while wearing "Beer goggles"  Several area business also had demos and static displays of different services they could provide young drivers. National Grid was on scene with a demo on what to do with down power lines if a car crashed into it. Rite Aid Drug store brought out the "Blind Side" tractor trailer to show the young drivers to look for blind spots when approaching these large vehicles on area roadways.

NEW STREET IN DISTRICT

Up in the upper part of the Britney Hills development, a new street has been added. It is SHAW COURT. It connects Kingsford Terrace to Ashfield Extension. This will be the home of the 2009 Parade of Homes. Watch for one or two more streets in that neighborhood.


 
2nd ALARM IN SOLVAY

OHFD Rescue pumper 2 with 6 volunteers responded to the scene on Breakspear Rd in the Westvale Section of Solvay. Crews laddered the building on all four sides, ran lights inside & out. Also preformed overhaul on the 2nd floor. Units cleared in 2 hours. No injuries reported. New Chief Pete Wentworth (Solvay) only 6 days in office had "Command"
